Modeling Local Area Network Traffic with Markovian Traffic Models

چکیده
In this work, we assess the suitability of some Markovian models and their associated fitting procedures to describe IP traffic exhibiting long-range dependence. We resort to traffic traces measured at the Institute of Telecommunications – Aveiro Pole. The models under analysis are special cases of Markov Modulated Poisson Processes (MMPPs): 2-MMPP, CMPP (Circulant Markov Poisson Process) and (2 ⊕ M/2)MMPP. These models are evaluated by comparing the density function, the autocovariance and the loss rate queuing behavior of the measured traces and of traces generated from the fitted models. Results show a good agreement for both the CMPP and (2 ⊕ M/2)-MMPP but a reasonable mismatch for the 2-MMPP model.

Multi-time-Scale Traffic Modeling Using Markovian and L-Systems Models
Traffic engineering of IP networks requires the characterization and modeling of network traffic on multiple time scales due to the existence of several statistical properties that are invariant across a range of time scales, such as selfsimilarity, LRD and multifractality. These properties have a significant impact on network performance and, therefore, traffic models must be able to incorpora...
متن کاملClosing the gap between traffic workload and channel occupancy models for 802.11 networks
The modeling of wireless network traffic is necessary to evaluate the possible gains of spectrum sharing and to support the design of new cognitive protocols that can use spectrum efficiently in network environments where diverse technologies coexist. In this paper we focus on IEEE 802.11 wireless local area networks and close the gap between two popular levels of modeling, macroscopic traffic ...
متن کاملPerformance Improvement of Expanded Integrated Local Area Networks (RESEARCH NOTE)
In Local Area Networks (LAN) connected together by bridges, flow control and smooth traffic in the network is very important. However, congestion at bridges can cause intensive loss of received frames. In addition, the received frames are thrown away and have to be retransmitted by the source station, which causes more congestion and massive reduction in the overall network throughput. The netw...
متن کاملModeling Network Traffic with Multifractal Behavior
The traffic engineering of IP networks requires accurate characterization and modeling of network traffic, due to the growing diversity of multimedia applications and the need to efficiently support QoS differentiation in the network. In recent years several types of traffic behavior, that can have significant impact on network performance, were discovered: longrange dependence, self-similarity...

Since the seminal study of Leland, Taqqu, Willinger and Wilson [41] which set the groundwork for considering self-similarity an important notion in the understanding of network traffic including the modeling and analysis of network performance, an explosion of work has ensued investigating the multifaceted nature of this phenomenon.1 The long held paradigm in the communication and performance c...
